Sign-texts unfold on two dimensions: the syntagmatic axis and the paradigmatic axis. Any semiotic practice, from a small dream to an entire culture, involves the two relations. This concept was first proposed by Saussure, and out of his four binary oppositions (signifier/signified, langue/parole, synchronic/diachronic, syntagmatic/paradigmatic), only this pair still has strong potential for development in today’s semiotics movement.

摘要

Sign-texts unfold on two dimensions: the syntagmatic axis and the paradigmatic axis. Any semiotic practice, from a small dream to an entire culture, involves the two relations. This concept was first proposed by Saussure, and out of his four binary oppositions (signifier/signified, langue/parole, synchronic/diachronic, syntagmatic/paradigmatic), only this pair still has strong potential for development in today’s semiotics movement.
