India is a huge market for the wind power industry as it is amongst the top five countries involved in the generation of power from wind energy. Due to the early developments in the wind energy sector in India almost all the wind-rich areas are being exploited to their threshold. Repowering of the old wind farms has become essential to give an impetus to industry and generate more power per tower from these wind-rich sites which are now working in fewer utilization factors. Despite the availability of a repowering policy in the country, the developers have not shown interest in this segment due to various issues underlying the investment outlays. The paper aims to explore the avenues in the repowering of old wind turbines in India along with mitigating the challenges in the activities associated with the process. To that end review of international case studies is performed to learn lessons from the success stories and lastly a business model is proposed for the successful implementation of repowering in the Indian context.
