Argentina, Australia and the Antarctic Settlement of 1959
摘要
The ‘Antarctic problem’ (i.e. the states’ different attitudes to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica) in the context of the great power competition between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War created significant geopolitical tensions in Antarctica. The region was on the brink of an international conflict. However, with the adoption of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, the Antarctic community was able to address these regional problems from a regional perspective. This chapter assesses the legal contributions of Argentina and Australia to the negotiations that concluded with the adoption of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 to manage regional geopolitical tensions created by the ‘Antarctic problem’.
