Social media is being ubiquitously used to recruit participants and collect data for research in the social sciences. The ease of use, familiarity, and logistical convenience provided by social media make them a suitable option for researchers to recruit participants. However, data collection through social media also presents certain practical challenges. Guidelines on using social media for recruiting participants are sparse, and the available ones comprise broad recommendations. Therefore, there is a need for contextualized and experiential accounts of social media recruitment of research participants. This chapter provides an account of how I used various social media to recruit participants and collect data for a project on mental health management. I also discuss the challenges and implications of using social media for recruiting participants. These observations from my study underscore the urgent need for clear guidelines and training on the effective use of social media in research.
