Implementation Research in India: Lessons from the Field
摘要
Despite growing awareness and recent policy advancements, there is a pressing need for mental health research that translates evidence-based interventions into real-world settings. Drawing on a variety of case studies and personal reflections, the chapter highlights key implementation strategies that have shown promise in India, such as task-sharing, integration of mental health care into primary health settings, and the use of digital platforms to enhance access to care. The importance of the community’s voice and their active involvement in the development of culturally appropriate models of care to ensure sustainability is also emphasized. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the barriers to implementation at various levels, including stigma, limited mental health help-seeking, inadequate funding, and the need for training and capacity building among health professionals. The chapter concludes by offering recommendations for improving the sustainability of evidence-based mental health interventions in India. These include strengthening multi-sectoral collaborations, promoting policy alignment, and fostering a research culture that prioritizes local context and stakeholder involvement in setting the research agenda, conceptualizing the design, and evaluating mental health programmes. This detailed examination aims to provide valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working towards achieving mental health equity in one of the world’s most populous and diverse nations.
