Ethical Concerns in Psychiatry Research and Possible Solutions
摘要
The ethics of conducting psychiatric research is assuming growing importance because of increasing attention to human rights and the various legislations about mental health care. Persons with mental disorders constitute a very vulnerable group of persons on account of the symptoms, cognitive impairment, and lack of insight. This chapter will provide an overview of the key ethical principles and considerations in psychiatric research, including respect for persons, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. It will also focus on the processes involved in obtaining informed consent, maintaining confidentiality and privacy, and managing conflicts of interest in psychiatric research. This is especially important in some populations such as the homeless, young children, and the elderly. This chapter showcases our team’s experience in conducting community-based research, highlighting the unique challenges and ethical considerations that emerge when recruiting individuals with serious mental illness and healthy participants from the same community. We outline effective recruitment strategies and discuss key approaches for engaging diverse participants, including young individuals. The essential ethical considerations that researchers must prioritize when working with these populations are also touched upon. We also discuss the importance of ongoing education and training for researchers and Institutional Review Boards to ensure the protection of human subjects and the integrity of research findings. This chapter aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the complex ethical issues in psychiatric research, ultimately benefiting emerging researchers and promoting a culture of responsible and ethical research practices that prioritize the well-being, dignity, and rights of individuals with mental health conditions.
