History, Purpose, and Models of Graduate Supervision

Graduate supervision has become such a defining feature of advanced education that it is easy to forget it is a relatively recent invention. The practice of one-on-one mentorship between faculty and graduate students—now taken as a given—emerged from specific historical, cultural, and institutional conditions. To understand supervision as pedagogy, it is essential to examine how it developed, what purposes it serves, and the variety of models through which it can be enacted.
