The Human Microbiota: Composition and Functions
摘要
The human body is home to the intricate and ever-changing human microbiota. The gut microbiota prevents infections by controlling inflammatory reactions and fostering nutritional competition, in addition to being necessary for digestion, food absorption, energy harvesting, bile acid metabolism, and immune system development. Beyond the colon, endotoxins and microbial metabolites affect distant organs like the liver, influencing the growth of health or illness. Dysbiosis, or a disturbance of the microbial balance, can result in pathobiont overgrowth, immunological dysregulation, and heightened vulnerability to metabolic, allergy, and infectious disorders. With current clinical trials examining their ability to prevent and treat microbiota-associated illnesses, growing familiarity with the makeup and purpose of the microbiota has stoked interest in therapeutic approaches, including probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation.
