Food as Medicine: Therapeutic Nutrition for Healing and Function in Diabetic Patients

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, very common in the adults in recent days and become epidemic throughout the globe. The major complain is the hyperglycemic condition of the body due to the insufficient production of the insulin. Persistent hyperglycemia further leads to other complications like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, lower limb amputation, vision loss etc. Several medicines are available to treat diabetes, but all are having several side effects on the body and also not cost effective. The major culprit behind this devastating disease is the food and their respective glycemic index. Therefore, choosing the right food is very important for persons suffering from diabetes in order to control the hyperglycemia. In ancient India, it was traditional to use several foods, and food component to treat the diseases, a practice known as Ayurveda. As a result, the search for proper foods or their components from natural products—mainly herbal sources—has increased tremendously in recent decades. However, the selection of the herbs depends on the several factors like, stage of the diabetes, type of comorbidity arises, availability and affordability. The research has recognized several foods, food components and herbs that may use as the remedies to control the diabetes. This chapter mainly focused on the food and the other natural herbs that paly major role to control the diabetes and their underlying mechanism to control the hyperglycemia.
