One of the major causes of bridge failure is local scour around its pier, as it exposes the pier foundation, reduces stability, and ultimately leads to structural collapse. Efforts are being made by various researchers to find the suitable scour protection measure. In this study, flow and scour analysis were conducted on a rectangular recirculating flume under mobile bed conditions for 3 set of discharges and to reduce the exposure of foundation various protection measures are used i.e., slot through pier, combination of slot and riprap, etc. Temporal variation of scour from the present study showed that around 90% of maximum scour depth takes place in the first 2 h of experimental run. Experimental results revealed that the combination of slot and riprap was the most effective in mitigating the scour. This approach achieved a reduction in maximum scour depth up to 91.43% and similarly it reduced the scour volume up to 87.92% when compared to an unprotected pier.

Efforts are being made by various researchers to find the suitable scour protection measure.
