Automation in Millet Processing Machinery: Developments and Challenges
摘要
Millets, which are also referred to as “nutri-cereals,” have gained international attention due to their nutritional benefits, climate adaptability, and contribution to food security. Still, traditional millet processing is generally manual, labor-intensive, and inefficient, which limits its broader application in modern food industry. This chapter aims to explore present advancements in the automation of millet processing and pinpoint the challenges associated with their integration into food production systems. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has further transformed millet processing through real-time monitoring, predictive control, and remote machinery operation. Meanwhile, robots and digitalization are revolutionizing the manufacturing of millet-based food products through the automation of extrusion, baking, packing, and labeling processes. Despite these advancements, substantial challenges also existed. The high prices of advanced technology, variations in grain size and hardness among millet types, and a lack of technical expertise in rural processing facilities restrict extensive implementation. In conclusion, automation in millet processing machinery can revolutionize the millet sector by enhancing efficiency, product quality, and market competitiveness. Nevertheless, its effective execution relies on overcoming problems associated with cost, scalability, and skill advancement.
