Teaching Secondary School Mathematics Using Examples: Benefits and Challenges from a Case Study of Teachers and Students in Solomon Islands
摘要
Examples play an important role in teaching and learning. In mathematics, many teachers lack the knowledge about how to use examples effectively. This study sought to explore a small sample of Solomon Islands (SI) teachers’ and students’ perceptions and practices related to teaching mathematics using examples. The findings from the interviews and observations revealed that SI teachers have limited knowledge of mathematics examples and their role in student learning. Therefore, it is crucial for Solomon Islands educators and policymakers to prioritise the use of examples in mathematics learning. In multilingual and multicultural settings, using various examples in mathematics teaching and learning can help students from different backgrounds learn better.
