This chapter relates to how the open-ended nature of design problems means that designers have to continually create and re-create frames for viewing design problems throughout the design process. This is a critical aspect of being designerly. Mitigating the difficulties that novice designers have with coherence in framing is the essence of the Cases in Point of this chapter. The first case illustrates how the designerly mindset for framing can be instilled in different learning contexts, including general study skills courses, as well as during textile design studios. The second case from the discipline of Fine Art exemplifies how the combined use of a self-analysis checklist and design crits can enhance coherency during graphic design through developing students' theoretical rationalization ability as part of concept development. The third case from Fashion Studies demonstrates how students can develop coherency for their patternmaking concepts through synthesizing drafting and draping techniques during creative exploration.

摘要
