Biopsychosocial Theories of Mental Health and Illness

There have been various attempts to explain the causation and treatment approaches in psychiatric disorders. A number of models have been proposed and tested since the inception. The biopsychosocial model is a well-recognized model that underpins key paradigm for advancing mental health research and practice. This chapter outlines the role of the model to understand mental disorders and comprehensive care by integrating biological, psychological, and social factors. Additionally, it highlights how biopsychosocial model addresses health care professional in conceptualizing mental disorders by understanding multidimensional health challenges and patient experiences. It has a substantial clinical implication in understanding mental disorder and clinical decision-making. This chapter also covers model limitations and debates like any other model.
