Psychiatric emergencies require the most crucial nursing care; these conditions demand critical analysis and prompt nursing intervention; therefore, they are very important in the critical pathway of treatment. Emergencies require competency in prompt management, documentation, and reporting. The specified and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for psychiatric emergencies and their knowledge can be a game changer in the care of mentally ill people and are essentially lifesaving. This chapter includes management concepts and the management of psychiatric emergencies like suicidal ideation and behavior, homicidal ideation and behavior, acute psychosis, agitation and mania and focuses on the nursing interventions specifically targeted in managing aggressive behavior, substance use, and drug toxicities and conditions like neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This chapter will help nurses use the nursing process and create their own SOPs and documentation process for effective management of psychiatric emergencies.
