Understanding Future Interpersonal Communication in the Construction Industry: A Motivational Language Theory Approach
摘要
Interpersonal communication is crucial, especially between supervisors and subordinates, in times of technological change within an organization. Therefore, this study aims to appraise interpersonal communication based on MLT to foster effective future workforce management in the construction industry. The research methodology adopted for this study is a qualitative approach based on secondary data sources, including articles and journals, as well as Smyth’s methodology process. The study is based on the use of motivational language theory (MLT), which involves the use of direction-giving, meaning-making, and empathetic language. The study revealed that existing studies have focused on motivational language theory, primarily based on superior-subordinate communication, in industries such as hotels, education, and healthcare. The study also revealed that interpersonal communication through the use of MLT can be applied to the construction industry during technological changes in areas such as change management, managing new construction workforce models, building construction workforce competence, enhancing construction workforce relations, and fostering construction workforce resilience. The study also revealed that Interpersonal communication through the use of MLT portends benefits for the construction industry, including enhanced worker performance, job satisfaction, work engagement, and team culture, as well as increased collaboration. The study further revealed that motivational languages that have been used in organizations (especially in times of change/disruptions) could provide a framework to guide construction managers/professionals on interpersonal communication during times of change. The study concludes that interpersonal communication, anchored in the three dimensions of MLT, can significantly support the construction workforce during times of change, while providing a framework for effective communication for construction managers. This study contributes to both scholarly and empirical research on interpersonal communication in times of change (primarily technological changes) in the construction industry and recommends the adoption of MLT for the construction industry.
