Midlife Crisis (1506–1509): Relegation to Longchang and the Subsequent Enlightenment

In the first year of the Zhengde period, Wang Yangming turned 35, and something unexpected happened. This accident changed the course of his life and thought. During the winter of that year, he was relegated to Longchang, a remote place in Guizhou province, and acted as Yicheng 驿丞 (Head of Longchang Outpost, one of the nine outposts in Shuixi 水西) because his strong criticism offended the chief eunuch Liu Jin.
