Addressing Challenges in Harvesting Algal Biomass for Pharmaceutical Applications
摘要
Algal harvesting is emerging as one of the major research areas due to the surge of interest in its potential for producing pharmaceutical products. Algae contains multifaceted range of bioactive compounds, having pharmaceutical applications such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-allergic substances. This chapter explores the evolution of algal harvesting techniques and their potential uses in the production of pharmaceutical products. Recent innovations and emerging technologies in cultivation, harvesting, processing, and extraction methods have enormously escalated the efficiency and yield of valuable algal compounds, including polysaccharides, peptides, and lipids, which possess strong medicinal properties. Algal harvesting and its significance in the pharmaceutical industries represent an expeditious boosting the field with significant potential for innovation and sustainability. This chapter focusses on some of the common key techniques applied for algal harvesting. Effective harvesting strategies are crucial for optimizing productivity and simultaneously reducing environmental impact. These strategies include mechanical, chemical, or biological methods, sustainable practices, innovative and advanced technologies, and biotechnological engineering approaches. Further, the efficiencies of the process development and environmental impacts on the production process have been discussed. It also delves into the pharmaceutical applications of algal-derived products. The last part of the chapter discusses the prospects and current obstacles for integrating algae harvesting technologies with pharmaceutical manufacturing, highlighting the importance of ongoing research to realize the potential of algal resources in the pharmaceutical sector. The pharmaceutical industry will be able to use algae not just as a renewable resource but also as a source of innovative and potent therapeutic medication by combining these developments with sustainable practices.
