Non-suicidal Self-Injury in Bangladesh
摘要
Recent evidence indicates a global attention on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which is yet to receive academic attention in Bangladesh. Although there has been an increase in the number of studies on suicide and suicidal behaviour, NSSI is still neglected in research as well as in health services in the country. There is a dearth of studies and complexities in assessing NSSI based on the intent of suicide. This chapter aims to shed light on epidemiology, the extent of research, and available services for NSSI in Bangladesh. Available evidence suggests that the prevalence ranged from 17% to 40.2% among university students and gays, respectively. Self-cutting (39%) and superficial burning (26%) are the common methods of NSSI. Like suicidal behaviour, psychiatric illness, relationship problems with family members and spouses, premarital and extramarital love affairs, and immediate life events are the major risk factors. Additional studies are warranted to get a complete picture of the extent of burden, risk factors for the consideration of service design and preventive measures of NSSI in Bangladesh.
