Based on the current legal structure, since the British period, a suicide attempt has been a criminal offense in Bangladesh. The Mental Health Act was approved in 2018; the National Mental Health Policy and the National Mental Health Strategic Plan (2020–2030) were approved in 2022 in the country. The Mental Health Act lacks attention to suicide prevention. However, the National Mental Health Policy prioritized the formulation of a national suicide prevention strategy, and the National Mental Health Strategic Plan prioritized suicide prevention, and decriminalization has been mentioned as a potential point of intervention. This chapter discusses the legal structure and its role in suicide prevention in Bangladesh.
