Learning accounting concepts can be simplified by making use of gamification. Gamification is the use of game mechanics and game dynamics to facilitate learning. The purpose of this research paper was to evaluate whether using gamification to teach Pastel Accounting software concepts to second-year university commerce students was a feasible approach to increasing motivation, engagement, and understanding. Pastel is an Accounting Information System (AIS) and is widely used in industry. AIS are defined as systems that help an organisation automate its financial transactions. The concepts relating to Pastel include adding organisations to the AIS, processing general ledger accounts, processing sales orders, creating purchase orders, and performing inventory counts. Students generally have limited classroom time when learning accounting concepts. A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is software that facilitates learning and was used to create a Pastel Game. The game uses gamification elements to teach Pastel concepts to the students and was developed using the Rapid Action Development (RAD) methodology. Two prototypes were developed and evaluated by commerce students before a final proof-of-concept version was developed and evaluated by students. The evaluations indicated that the students found the game’s interface and information quality above average, as well as the system’s usefulness. The study indicated that the overall user satisfaction amongst the participants was high. Some technical improvements were proposed, and the findings indicated that gamification is a viable method to teach Pastel Accounting concepts.

摘要
