Flavonoids are plant-synthesized organic compounds that are widely distributed in nature and well accepted for their essential role in promoting wellness as key phytonutrients. They are richly represented in fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and several other plant-derived foods that form a routine part of human nutrition. Due to their strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, flavonoids have received growing interest for their potential role in managing various health disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurodegenerative ailments, chronic inflammations, skin conditions, and certain cancers. Diets high in flavonoid content have also been linked to a slower aging process, better heart health, improved regulation of blood glucose in type 2 diabetes, better cognitive function, and memory retention. Even with these promising health advantages, the effective application of flavonoids in medical or clinical practice is quite challenging. One of the major issues is their limited absorption in the digestive system and rapid metabolic breakdown inside body. In addition, the quantity and chemical formulation of flavonoids often vary significantly among different natural sources, which makes it difficult to ensure uniform dosage and product standard. Because these compounds are often integrated within complex plant structures, isolating and estimating their specific pharmacological effects becomes much more challenging. Moreover, flavonoids can interact with other medicinal drugs inside the body, potentially influencing their therapeutic performance or occasionally producing minor and unintended side effects. This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of various categories of flavonoids, emphasizing their biological importance along with their pharmacokinetics and dynamic characteristics. It also emphasizes the major challenges that halt the progress of flavonoid studies from experimental research to practical clinical utilization. Finally, this chapter discussed rising approaches aiming to enhance the stability, absorption, and overall effectiveness of flavonoids, making flavonoids more suitable for practical use in modern medicine and healthcare.
