Superhero Healthcare
摘要
Superhero Healthcare is a sub-genre that stems from both the superhero and graphic medicine genres which uses the superhero motif as a metaphor to embody traits of hope and resilience. The sub-genre builds upon public information comics to explore aspects of the superhero and its connection to human experience. The superhero is an effective metaphor for humanity due to its blend of fantasy and reality which is interwoven into its storytelling. The superhero offers an embodiment of wish fulfilment and is also a reflection of humanity’s hopes and fears which adapts to suit contemporary concerns. This research suggests that the superhero genre has used healthcare topics long before the creation of graphic medicine, from the UK’s Health Education Council’s advertising campaign of “Superman vs Nick O’Teen” to the New Teen Titan’s drug awareness public service comics of the 1980s, but that the graphic medicine genre has developed this to fully utilise the strengths of both genres. This sub-genre uses traits of the superhero to focus on an individual’s journey and how they can instill traits of their fictional heroes to inspire change in their lives. Superhero Healthcare can offer an exploration of what it is to be human.
