The Emergence of Wushu in the Early Republic of China

In the early years of the Republic of China, various adjustments and changes were made to martial arts to adapt to social demands. Under the influence of the educational ideology of militaristic nationalism, martial arts undergone changes both in content and form in order to be integrated into Western-style schools. In the military, the “Chinese new Wushu” that simplified the complex became famous for a time. The vigorous advocacy of social elites became a powerful driving force for the modern development of martial arts. Martial arts found its own position in the rise of various schools and the national salvation and survival. The establishment of folk martial arts organizations represented by the Beijing Physical Education Research Society conformed to the trend of the times.
