The Construction of the Contemporary Chinese Concept of “Human Being”
摘要
In comparison to the concept of ziran自然, the concept of “human beings” (ren人) is another term that has undergone a conceptual transformation in contemporary China and within the history of the formation of contemporary modern Chinese concepts it occupies a manifestly important position. The construction of the contemporary Chinese concept of “human being” without a doubt unfolds on many levels and it has especially become highly specialized. Ernst Cassirer has pointed out that “The paramount importance of the problem was still felt in all the different branches of knowledge and inquiry. But an established authority to which one might appeal no longer existed. Theologians, scientists, politicians, sociologists, biologists, psychologists, ethnologists, economists all approached the problem from their own viewpoints. To combine or unify all these particular aspects and perspectives was impossible. And even within the special fields there was no generally accepted scientific principle.” This saying is applicable to a certain degree to the contemporary Chinese concept of “human being.”
