Role of Fruit Development in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Nepal
摘要
The United Nations, under its 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for implementation by various nations for which Nepal has also set its targets to achieve them. The aims of SDG-2 “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”, and SDG-3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages” are directly related to nutrition and health. Fruit consumption can help meet the targets of these goals as the fruits contain several vitamins and other nutrients. Despite the favorable climatic and soil conditions existing in the country and the government efforts, fruit development in terms of increasing quantity and quality of fruits is taking place very slowly. The Government of Nepal started activities for fruit development only six decades ago. Some basic works have been carried out for the development of fruits, but there are various constraints for their development in the country. They are related to government policies and planning, poor infrastructure and inadequate allocation of funds for research and development. More field research activities need to be carried out to generate appropriate technologies while extension workers should be trained adequately so that they could provide required services to the farmers. Similarly, there are several technical constraints related to agronomy, harvesting and postharvest technology, packaging, storage and transportation and marketing facilities. These constraints indicate the need for more research efforts to generate technologies suitable for fruit cultivation in the hilly regions of Nepal. This article deals with the impact of fruit development on achieving various SDGs on food security, environment, and health of the people, and overall economy of the country. The prospect of fruit cultivation utilizing advanced technologies also has been discussed in the context of fruit development in Nepal.
