The beverage industry, encompassing both alcoholic and non-alcoholic segments, plays a pivotal role in the global and Indian food processing sectors. Globally, the beverage market was valued at USD 1180 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.3%, reaching an 84.1% increase by 2026. India’s beverage sector, driven by shifting consumer preferences, rising disposable incomes, and a youthful demographic, is expected to register a CAGR of 48.31% between 2024 and 2028, reaching an estimated market volume of USD 5971 million. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage markets in India to evaluate their growth trajectories. The non-alcoholic segment, comprising bottled water, carbonated drinks, juices, energy drinks, and ready-to-drink (RTD) tea, is dominated by carbonated beverages in terms of market share. Notably, states such as Bihar and Odisha have shown the highest growth in non-alcoholic beverage consumption with CAGRs of 17.69% and 17.67%, respectively. Meanwhile, in the alcoholic segment, revenue generation varies significantly across states. In Haryana and Assam, “country spirits” dominate, contributing over 80% of the total revenue. In contrast, states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan demonstrate a balanced contribution from both “foreign liquors and spirits” and “country spirits.” The findings underscore the sector’s potential for economic contribution, job creation, and value addition, while also highlighting the need for sustainable practices and regulatory reforms to enhance growth and environmental responsibility.
