The contemporary political landscape has been significantly impacted by environmental problems. Recently, many substantial studies have suggested that environmental crises may trigger conflict. The objective of this chapter is to examine how Gandhi’s vision for participatory democracy and his nonviolent methods for conflict resolution can contribute to resolving environmental conflicts and enhancing ecological sustainability. By exploring Gandhi’s ideas on self-rule, simplicity, and nonviolence in the context of environmental conflicts, this study aims to reveal new insights into how his approach can address issues like deforestation, water scarcity, and resource-based disputes. Gandhi believed true democracy should emerge naturally within communities, not be imposed by outside forces. He advocated for a comprehensive merger of nature and democratic communities, emphasizing peaceful and non-coercive power. Gandhi believed in conversation, empathy, and nonviolent resistance for conflict resolution. Participatory democracy stimulated community involvement in environmental policy for sustainable growth.
