Sustainable Concrete Solutions: Harnessing CornCob as a Renewable Resource
摘要
The agricultural waste is disposed of either by burning it or throwing it in a landfill. In this an attempt is made to utilize the agricultural byproduct corn cob to develop a green concrete. This in turn will reduce the environmental pollution and reduce the greenhouse gas emission from conventional concrete. The used corn cob is crushed into powder and is added as additives with cement. Experiments were carried out on mortar cubes and concrete cubes with 0%, 1% and 2% of corn cob with respect to weight of the cement and studied its dry density, wet density, water absorption, compressive strength, slum value and air porosity. by using corn cob waste to make a concrete cube with different corn cob percentages. From the test results it is found that concrete with corn cob as additives of 2% with respect to weight of cement give high compressive strength and has less weight compared to conventional concrete. Corn cob is an agricultural byproduct and thereby it absorbs more water than conventional concrete, but still it increased the strength as it fills the voids between fine and coarse aggregate and is evident from its less air porosity value. It is highly recommended to use corn cob as additives in concrete but still it requires further test to use under tensile load.
