There is a variation of age at natural menopause in Indian women based on several sociocultural and epidemiological factors. Women who have not attained menopause by the age of 55 years are considered to have delayed menopause. Some factors associated with delayed menopause include multiparity, longer breastfeeding, alcohol and caffeine consumption, obesity, and use of combined oral contraceptives. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome also have an increased chance of attaining menopause late. The risks of delayed menopause include an increase of estrogen-dependent cancers such as breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancer. Women who attain menopause late should be encouraged to get screened annually for cancers. However, there are some advantages of longer years of estrogen exposure. These include a reduction in osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. There is also an increase in life expectancy and decrease in all-cause mortality.
