Conclusion
摘要
The author concludes her research by reiterating that previous neoliberal policies enacted to eradicate poverty tended to occur in a vacuum, and argues that such a perspective needs to be expanded to include empirical analyses of gender beliefs and consideration of a community’s historical dispossession, if any subsequent policies are to be effective in ending poverty and deprivation for a community. In the context of the Malaysian Tamil community, the reality of poverty persists due to past injustices and ineffectual policies. It is further exacerbated by cultural norms which encourage the existing gaps in healthcare, education and economic opportunities. Advocacy for focused initiatives which tackle the triple yoke structure of oppression (belief systems, socioeconomic inequality, and race-based deprivation) is key to making inroads to building a society where equality is prioritised.
