Food production is associated with pest infestations that feed on or use the crops in other ways. Hence, there is a necessity to manage these pest populations to reduce yield losses. Pest management is the application of any practices that either keep the pest numbers low or decreases the susceptibility of a crop to pest infestation. The practices are grouped into eight methods. This chapter describes these methods: what they are, how they affect pests, the benefits, and limitations of each. The goal of pest management science is to produce sufficient food without harming the environment or people and obtain a profit for the grower. Information on pest assessment and the considerations pertinent to pest management are also reviewed.
