Various methods have been developed for glycan synthesis, and some of which have been applied to the automation of glycan synthesis. The methods of glycan synthesis can be broadly divided into chemical and enzymatic methods, but further distinction can be made between solid-phase and solution-phase methods; thus they can be divided into four categories: chemical-solid phase [1], chemical-solution phase [2], enzymatic-solid phase [3], and enzymatic-solution phase [4] (Fig. 32.1). From the perspective of commercially available equipment, the chemical-solid phase method is slightly ahead, but each method has its advantages and disadvantages.
