Adaptation Strategies in Plants

In recent years, climate change has gained significant attention from all fields of study due to the impacts it has laid upon all living organisms from plants to animals and even microorganisms. Especially, environmental stresses resulting from changes in climate have affected the growth and development of floras. These abiotic stressors refer to the adverse effects of any environmental factor on organisms. The stresses which include extreme temperatures, salinity, drought, nutrient deficiency, heavy metals, and many more have jeopardized the survival and reproduction of flora. They severely impose negative effects on plants on multiple levels such as physiological, phenological, biochemical and molecular. Therefore, to cope with changing climate and the stresses laid upon by it, plants have adopted different adaptation measures to ensure their survival. The different alterations a plant adapt to sustain in unfavourable and changing climatic conditions includes regulating water loss, shifts in flowering and fruiting patterns, undergoing seed dormancy, altering dispersal mechanisms and other modifications involving changes in its morphology. These adaptation strategies help plants to ensure resources for their subsistence and provide them with reproductive success in changing climatic conditions. Several measures involving physiological, behavioral, phenological changes, migration and production of certain phytohormones and antioxidants help plants to manage with the stresses imposed on them. By understanding the role of adaptation strategies in plants, it will become easier to monitor the responses of plants with respect to climate change, which eventually will become crucial for developing conservation strategies for ecosystems. This will also help plant breeders to selectively adopt those adaptations that help plants survive during harsh circumstances and develop new varieties that are stress-resistant in nature.
