Test Method Research on HVDC DBS Valves

DC Dynamic Braking System (DBS) is typically used in VSC-HVDC connected large offshore wind farm integration systems, to prevent DC system over-voltage in the event of AC grid faults or emergency power control instruction by absorbing the surplus power fed from the wind farm. A new design solution of the DBS valve is practiced in BorWin6 project in Germany, which is under construction and scheduled to be commissioned in 2027. After providing a brief overview of the basic principle of the new DBS valve solution, this paper focuses on the electrical tests of the DBS valve to validate the design rationalities with details on test methods and test results, proposing the first engineering validation framework based on Chapter 13 of IEC 62501:2024.
