Non-deterministic Structural Fluctuation in Crystal Nucleation and Phase Transition
摘要
This chapter examines the structural dynamics of NPs smaller than the critical size for nucleation in a polymorphic system. A sample preparation method developed in this study utilized the large surface area of CNTs as an “unrestricted observation space,” allowing for the in-situ formation and growth of Al2O3 NPs under TEM observation. Nucleating NPs were found to fluctuate among different polymorphs and an amorphous state. Variable-temperature observations and quantitative analyses of these fluctuations revealed the energy landscape. Millisecond imaging further clarified the transformation mechanism, which proceeds through transient disordering.
