This chapter provides an overview of the current theoretical understanding and previous experimental approaches to phase transitions. It also introduces the single molecule,atomic-resolution, time-resolved electron microscopy (SMART-EM) imaging technique, a key enabler of this study, which allows for the visualization of phase dynamics in nanoparticles with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.
