Complexity Underlying the Evolution of Modern Populist Political Rhetoric
摘要
This concluding chapter raises an additional important aspect for the rise of emotion-laden populist rhetoric around the world: the hyper-complexity of the digital, social media-dominated, global communication network. The chapter starts with a widespread consumer scenario serving as an introductory metaphor for the problem. It then explains how complexity manifests itself in the contemporary media environment. Thereafter, it shows how many of the chapters in these two companion volumes illustrate the development of populist oratory and accompanying trends—followed by a few national examples that seem to be exceptions to the rule but actually illustrate the rule. This chapter concludes by suggesting future research into extreme political speech, taking into account one further element heretofore mostly neglected in the literature: neuropsychology.
