Military Conflicts in the Post-Truth Era: An Analysis of the Russian-Ukrainian War in a Romanian Newspaper
摘要
The two sides of truthfulness: sincerity and accuracy are reversed in the post-truth era where the emphasis is increasingly on appearance of sincerity at the expense of factual accuracy. This chapter discusses the concepts of post-truth and strategic epistemology towards media before attempting to answer the following questions: How are military conflicts represented in the post-truth era? How do politicians construct their post-truth rhetoric? How do media users relate to this political construction of reality? To answer these questions, this chapter analyzes how post-truth discourses on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict by such politicians as Diana Șoșoacă and George Simion are mediated in the Romanian newspaper Libertatea in its coverage from February 2022 to February 2024. The results highlight affiliative and affective rhetoric that appeals to the Romanian audience with its aspiring character that offers coping mechanisms, much like in the case of the “Trump effect.”
