Innovative Approaches in Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by its aggressive behavior and limited treatment options, with tumors typically diagnosed at advanced stages that show resistance to standard therapies. The need for innovative and effective treatments has become more critical than ever, especially considering that survival rates have consistently remained discouragingly low, around 10% on average. The recent advancements in pancreatic cancer treatment highlight the integration of molecular profiling, advanced diagnostics, and personalized therapies to enhance patient outcomes. This chapter discusses how molecular profiling, using tools like next-generation sequencing (NGS) and liquid biopsies (including circulating tumor DNA), enables the analysis of tumors at a molecular level. It highlights how these techniques help identify crucial mutations and biomarkers, allowing for personalized treatment strategies tailored to each patient’s unique profile. Furthermore, we address the role of integrating molecular diagnostics into clinical practice, which helps identify biomarkers that contribute to early detection and better cancer prognosis. In recent years, liquid biopsies have emerged as a non-invasive tool for collecting vital information about tumor behavior, though their full clinical potential is still being investigated through ongoing research. Additionally, the advancements in personalized treatment strategies through targeted therapies focused on individual molecular profiles have been discussed. It includes case studies that showcase the successful implementation of these therapies while emphasizing the role of multidisciplinary teams in creating personalized treatment plans. Overall, the chapter offers a comprehensive understanding of ongoing research into innovative approaches, from molecular subtyping to personalized treatment, in pancreatic cancer, with the goal of improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for patients with pancreatic cancer.
