ADAS-Based Assessment of Bus Drivers’ Speeding Behaviour
摘要
In year 2022, India experienced a notable increase in road fatalities, with overspeeding identified as a primary contributor of crashes involving rear-end collisions, hit-and-runs, side collisions, etc. Among the various road users, large vehicles like buses/trucks contributes significantly due to one of the major human error, i.e. indiscipline speeding behaviour by the drivers, necessitating a comprehensive study. This study deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in 76 public transit buses of Hyderabad city (India), operating along the National Highway (NH)-65 interurban corridor to Vijayawada. These ADAS device provide various alerts based on their violations and any impending chances of collision in the form of visual and audio alerts relating to forward collisions, inadequate time headway, lane deviations, pedestrians hazards, and have speed, timestamp, and geo-positional information. So, this study utilized these ADAS alerts from the subject vehicles and the road network with all geometric details, and comprehensively analysed the bus driver’s speeding behaviour over a testbed under NH-65 that spans from Hyderabad city to Kodad town of 190 km length. This study analysed over a million of ADAS alerts, and analysis results revealed higher speed (66–75 Kmph) alerts in mid-block and straight sections, indicating potential driver complacency, while curves prompted cautious driving. Further, identified the ‘Speed Violation Regions’ using the spatial and statistical tool, i.e. Point Density Estimation Method (PDE) in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform, crucial for targeted safety measures and driver education along interurban highways.
