Visitors to the Mogao Caves should not miss Cave 323 on the bottom of the northern section. This is a medium-sized cave with front and rear chambers. The murals in the front chamber and passageway leading to the rear chamber were all repainted in the Xixia (Western Xia) Dynasty; the statues of the seated Buddha in the square niche on the main (west) wall of the rear chamber should have been modified later on. However, the wall-paintings behind the group statues and the other three walls were of the works of the early or high Tang dynasty. On both sides of the east wall gate, there is a picture series expressing the determination of monks to strictly observe the precepts at the sacrifice of their lives. On the lower part of the north and south walls are painted respectively a row of seven standing Bodhisattva portraits of the same height. Above them are generally called Illustrations of Buddhist Sites and Relics in History and Illustrations of Sympathetic Response. The most noteworthy are the former paintings, since here is a collection of famous legends or stories in Chinese history like Zhang Qian’s Mission to the Western Regions, Buddhacinga Cleansing His Own Bowels, and Stone Buddha Statues Emerging on the River, painted in a fashion similar to unfolded scroll paintings. This is unique among the murals in the Dunhuang caves.
