During the period of new ethnography, folklore studies became closely connected with other humanities and social sciences through folk narratives, achieving significant research progress over the past two to three decades. Among these advancements, the most theoretically constructive progress has been the understanding of the nature of folk narratives. Additionally, since the early twentieth century, some classic textual studies established in folklore, such as folk art and epic research, have seen breakthroughs through transcultural exchanges and interdisciplinary research. Scholars from folklore studies and various academic fields have reached a consensus on a critical point: the meaning of folk narratives exists not only within their texts but also beyond them, as products of self-culture, ethnic folklore, community and regional traditions, social movements, and international exchanges.
