Standing Tall and Firm and Applied Expansion: A Promoter of Theoretical Consciousness
摘要
Zheng Hangsheng proposed that for contemporary Chinese sociology to achieve substantial development, it must embody a spirit of being both “standing tall and firm and rooted in reality” (“ding tian li di” 顶天立地). This means maintaining both a global vision and a cutting-edge perspective while also embracing local characteristics and grassroots sentiments. “Standing tall and firm” entails pursuing the frontiers of knowledge and thinking globally; “rooted in reality” involves going deep into the grassroots and embodying a grounded, people-centered approach. It is precisely based on this philosophy of standing tall with integrity and the unity of knowledge and action that Zheng Hangsheng led his academic team to ground their work in China's practical realities. While exploring the frontiers of sociological theory, they also actively conducted in-depth field research. Through distilling and summarizing the “Chinese experience,” they continuously developed rich and multilayered Middle range sociological theories and actively applied and expanded them in practice. In doing so, Zheng Hangsheng became a key driver of theoretical consciousness in Chinese sociology.
