Overview of Abiotic Stress and Its Agricultural Impact
摘要
The global climate scenario is unpredictable and constantly changing. As a result, various abiotic stress factors are impacting cultivation practices and production worldwide. Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns, seawater inundation and heavy metal accumulation in cultivable soil are worsening existing burdens on agriculture. Human actions have complicated this situation through the overexploitation of natural resources, the indiscriminate use of fertilisers and poor irrigation practices. It is essential to identify the various abiotic stress factors that negatively affect global crop production. Understanding the critical morpho-physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms within plants, as well as their interactions in response to these stresses, is extremely important in addressing these challenges. Advances in conventional breeding and biotechnological tools have significantly strengthened efforts to combat these issues, which require further understanding to progress. This chapter provides a brief overview of the different abiotic stress factors impacting global crop production, their effects and the current status of plant breeding and biotechnology-based mitigation strategies.
