Schisandra Michx., a member of the Magnoliaceae family, is a valuable medicinal plant species native to China. The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China contains two species of Schisandra chinensis (S. chinensis (Tuecz.) Bail.) and (S. sphenanthera Rehd. et Wils.). The fruit is harvested in autumn when ripe, then dried, with stems and impurities removed, and the dried fruit is subsequently used in medicinal applications. According to the Tang dynasty’s Newly Revised Materia Medica, Schisandra embodies “five flavors – sweet and sour in the skin and flesh, pungent and bitter in the seed, and salty overall,” hence its name, which translates as Schisandra.
