Semiotic Selves: Goffman Meets Systemic Functional Linguistics
摘要
This chapter delves into the theoretical foundations that underpin the study’s conceptualisation of the discursive self-presentation. By synthesising insights from Goffman’s dramaturgical view of self and SFL, the chapter proposes a nuanced theoretical perspective for understanding how individuals craft identity through evaluative language. The chapter critically examines the ‘self’ as a dynamic, performative semiotic construct, by exploring two key areas: (1) what is discursive self-presentation?—by drawing on Goffman’s dramaturgical view towards the ‘self’ and self-presentation, and (2) how does the study unpack discursive self-presentation?—by outlining SFL’s theoretical conceptualisation of language, particularly its interpersonal functionality. The chapter identifies the semiotic resources that enable sophisticated interpersonal meaning-making in social interactions.
