This chapter serves as an introduction to the book. Following the initial section on political oratory, the chapter is organized into six additional sections. The second section defines the two key terms central to the book—oratory and rhetoric. The third and fourth sections adhere to Aristotle’s framework, distinguishing between three political genres and the three modes of appeal that are fundamental to the strategy of persuasive communication. The fifth section posits that the selection of the most appropriate speech style and structure significantly influences a politician’s use of various rhetorical devices and figures of speech, which in turn affect public perceptions of political events, issues, and candidates. The sixth section argues that culture, particularly political culture, plays a crucial role in shaping the language of political discourse, highlighting key factors that should be considered in its analysis. The final section of this chapter outlines the core intellectual objectives that motivated the creation of this book, details its structure, and provides a brief description of each contribution.
