Reading Short Stories in the EFL Classroom: Effects of Focusing on Narrative Structure and Cultural Context
摘要
Franco Moretti proposed the concept of “distant reading” as opposed to close reading, advocating for its efficacy in comprehending world literature, while David Damrosch claimed that world literature is “a mode of circulation and of reading”. In an era where diversity is emphasized, it is difficult to find a single answer to the question of how to read literature. But it is precisely in this modern age that the significance of close reading of foreign literary works should be reevaluated as an effective means of experiencing and understanding different cultures. However, close reading of literary works in English presents a formidable challenge for EFL students. With that in mind, this chapter, employing a short story as teaching material, examines a methodology that facilitates reading and understanding of the historical and sociocultural background of literary works, focusing on the narrative structure as a starting point, and then approaching the core meaning of the work in a step-by-step manner. To enhance the effectiveness of this approach, it is proposed that collaborative group work be utilized.
