As one of the world’s largest and most densely populated cities, the effective municipal solid waste management is critical for Tokyo for sustainable urban living. This chapter introduces current situation of waste generation and treatment in Tokyo, reviews the existing problems of its waste management system and released policy plans, and discusses the expected effects to further reduce environmental impacts and promote circular economy practices from the Urban Nexus point of view. The findings offer a brief understanding of the current state and future policy direction of waste management in Tokyo and insights into how other megacities can optimize their waste management systems within the Urban Nexus context to improve the interconnectedness among various urban systems, including water, energy, food, and waste.
